On October 17, 2020, during the 44-day Patriotic War, the center of Ganja, located outside the conflict zone, was once again intensively fired by the Armenian armed forces using prohibited weapons, including ballistic missiles and cassette bombs. As a result of these missile strikes, 4 women, 3 children, and 13 people lost their lives; 20 women, 5 children, and 48 citizens suffered serious injuries.
The President gave instructions to perpetuate the memory of Ganja residents who lost their lives as a result of the tragedy and designed the Ganja Memorial Complex, taking into account the conservation of the damaged buildings in the area. The foundation of the complex was laid by the president of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev. The concept consists of a museum building reflecting a complex unique architectural style, aesthetically beautiful and functional landscape solutions developed by the prestigious British company “Chapman Taylor," and a construction project by the State Senior Design Institute "Azermemarlayihe," which is part of the structure of the State Committee for Urban Planning and Architecture.
Ganja Memorial Complex will cover 4 ha of land. The Memorial Monument is designed in a spiral shape, designed to descend to a depth of 12 m. It is an example of architecture designed in an artistic image and minimalism style, reflecting the horrors of the event. Also, special areas were planned for the observation of the spiral shape of the museum complex. The museum building, located on the territory of the complex, will serve to inform visitors in detail and play a special role in covering Ganja events.
At the same time, in addition to the museum building, the part where the remains and traces of residential buildings destroyed by missile strikes will be stored is intended as a continuation of the open-air complex. A large park has also been designed here for the improvement of the damaged part of the city and the recreation of the population. It is also planned to build 3 entrance arches, 1 fountain, 1 boiler room with engineering facilities, 1 transformer substation, 1 underground pump room, and 2 underground drinking and fire water tanks. The construction area of newly designed buildings and structures on the territory of the complex is 3 140.2 m2, the area of all above-ground floors is 3 542.2 m2, and the area of preserved buildings is 2 965.9 m2. The existing monument, located on the territory, covers a construction area of 18.2 m2.
